Night Out for Safety and Liberation (NOSL) is an annual nationwide event on the second Tuesday of August where neighbors gather to redefine and re-imagine what true public safety means for our communities. NOSL events began in 2013 as an alternative to the more police-centric National Night Out which highlights law enforcement-community partnerships as the pathway to community safety. NOSL organizers felt strongly that issues of safety must evolve beyond policing and punishment to include a primary focus on issues such as low-wage jobs, healthy food, accessible healthcare, education and more.
A highlight of the year for SF-IRP, we have been organizing NOSL events with other San Francisco community partners for the last several years. SF-IRP emphasizes that safety also necessitates awareness of racial profiling with a strong, community-wide commitment to preventing harm, injury and stigmatization of People of Color.
